Concrete Deck Construction
Concrete deck construction is a quicker and cheaper alternative to building a deck as opposed to building one with wood. The process is simple and can normally be done by a home owner.
Concrete deck construction does, however, require special tools and specific materials. These include a concrete mixer; wood, rubber or plastic for a frame to keep the concrete in place; rebar to strengthen the concrete; gravel; a shovel and texture mats.
The first step in the concrete deck construction process is to dig out the area that will become the deck with a shovel. The area should be dug out at least six inches deep; once that step is completed, approximately two inches of gravel should be put in the hole. The gravel helps to ensure the deck drains properly and is of particular need in areas where the temperature can change drastically (and experiences frequent freezes).
Once the area that will serve as the base of the concrete deck construction is dug and the gravel set in, the frame needs to be built around the edges. The frame should be rooted into the ground solidly so it holds in place when the concrete is poured. The top of the frame should be equal to the lawn around it, so the deck is even with the ground when it is completed.
Once the frame is built, the rebar should be placed into the hole, about two inches above the gravel. The rebar serves to keep the deck stable and unifies the concrete after it is poured. Once the rebar is in place, the concrete can be poured. It should be poured quickly, but evenly. Pouring concrete on very hot days is not recommended, as it may dry too quickly.
Once the concrete is poured, it should be rewetted several times for varying periods over the next few days. Once it finally cures, lawn chairs, mats and other deck items can be brought out and safely placed on the new concrete deck construction.
