Construction Management Association
A construction management association is a group intended to support and promote the growth and acceptance of construction management as a professional discipline. Construction management associations are beginning to be founded around the world, but the largest and best known is the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA).
As the world's leading construction management association, the CMAA has a membership of more than 5000 individuals and firms. Their members include owners, engineers, architects, contractors, educators and students. Each member of a construction management association receives the latest information on construction management developments and trends, as well as job leads. They are also invited to attend training seminars on the latest technologies, including on Building Information Modeling (BIM), the most advanced three-dimensional modeling program currently available.
Members of a construction management association are held to codes of ethics and accountability, and violating those standards could lead to dismissal from the organization or worse. A construction management association frequently sends its members information on the latest changes in construction laws or information how to take certification exams. In most cases, they also make manuals and test preparation guides available to their membership.
Construction managers can take a number of courses on new technologies or refresher courses through a construction management association. The CMAA, for instance, offers classes, seminars, mentoring programs and even information on how to renew your license.
Another responsibility of a construction management association is to promote their members and their programs to others. In most cases, this means promoting themselves to the government through lobbying. The CMAA is one construction management association that not only follows the developments in Washington that could affect the construction management profession, but actively lobbies members of congress on issues they feel will have an effect on their members. A portion of the dues paid by members of the CMAA goes towards these lobbying efforts on the assumption that they will support the construction management profession in the long term.
