A construction manager or project manager holds an extremely important job that can overwhelm an individual if they don't have help. A construction office manager handles a number of duties that help keep a construction project on course.

A construction office manager helps coordinate the work process for a project. They are responsible for the planning, organization and control of all clerical work, including the preparation, coordination and storage of project-related data. In order to ensure those tasks are completed successfully, the construction office manager frequently oversees a team of secretaries or clerks.

A construction office manager may also play a role in other critical areas, including budget development, purchasing, accounting, records management, forms management, facilities management and payroll. They may also be tasked with overseeing items required by the government, such as affirmative action and equal employment opportunity enforcement.

The construction office manager works closely with the project manager to ensure that all aspects of the project have the equipment and information they need, from hard hats to blueprints to the right number of employees. If a safety or risk manager is not on the construction site at all times, the construction office manager may also pick up some of the responsibility for health and safety programs mandated by the company and the government.

Virtually all aspects of day-to-day office operations are handled by the construction office manager. These include monitoring the construction manager's schedule, planning meetings, purchasing office supplies, making copies and monitoring phone and E-mail activity.

While it may not sound like much on paper and can be easily overlooked when looking at the overall picture of a construction project, the role of a construction office manager is vital to the day-to-day operation of that project. A construction office manager must not only understand basic secretarial duties, but the construction industry as well. It is a job which requires a variety of talents, as a construction office manager must be a leader in some functions and an underling in others. It is frequently a tough, rapidly changing job that requires an intelligent, capable individual.
