Construction Project Checklist

A construction project checklist is a list of steps that need to be taken in order for a construction project to be successfully completed. A construction project checklist can be long and extensive for the likes of a project manager, but can be much shorter for someone specializing in one specific area of construction.

The steps on a construction project checklist must be completed before the project can be considered complete and turned over to the property owner. These steps include work on the interior and exterior of the building and include the most major and minor steps. Failure to complete all the steps on a construction project checklist could lead to the rejection of the project and costly additional work done by the contractor.

There is more than one type of construction project checklist. Before construction begins, there is are pre-construction checklists, which include steps that ensure the proper engineering documents are on hand and that all permits have been obtained, among other steps. There is also a site preparation checklist that should be followed before the first shovel of sand is moved. This checklist reminds the construction team to take steps that include checking for all underground facilities, staking the property lines of the project and making sure all routes, both above and below ground, are cleared of obstacles.

Laborers working on certain segments of the project also receive a specific construction project checklist. Employees working on putting together the frame of the building are given one checklist, while the laborers taking care of the concrete work receive another. There is a construction project checklist for plumbing installation, wiring, heating and air conditioning installation and sprinkler systems, if need be.

There is also a checklist detailing steps that all employees must take to ensure their safety on the construction site. The steps on that checklist must be followed at all times; if the contractor does not ensure that the safety checklist is not followed, the consequences, should they be caught, could lead to a fine and damage to their reputation--if not worse.
