Construction Project Engineer
A construction project engineer plays a critical role in any construction project. In some cases, construction project engineers serve as overall project managers; in some cases, they support the project manager by focusing on one specific part of the project. In any case, a construction project engineer is vitally important to a project's success.
All project engineers are qualified engineers and are employed by the construction company serving as the general contractor. If the construction project engineer is not overseeing the entire project, it is likely they are one of several project engineers attached to it. Depending on the project, a construction project engineer can be a civil engineer, monitoring overall construction; a mechanical engineer, overseeing the installation of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems or an electrical engineer, tasked with overseeing the installation of wiring and other related items. In some cases, there is a senior project engineer, who oversees all the construction project engineers and serves as a second in command to the project manager.
As part of their assignment, a construction project engineer is held responsible for keeping their segment of the project on time, within budget and up to the standards of his company and those of the client. The responsibilities can include schedule preparation and resource forecasting for specific activities; they are also in charge of performance management of their subcontractors. They are tasked with ensuring the accuracy of the budget and other financial forecasts.
Construction project engineers are highly trained and have extensive engineering experience before being appointed to this important position. They must not only be able to handle the budget and schedule for their portion of the project, as well as the employees under them, they must be able to work effectively with other high-ranking members of the project.
The quality of a construction project manager will go a long way in determining the success or failure of a construction project. With extensive experience and knowledge of their specific field, a construction project manager should be a fountain of information for their employees; their experience with budgeting, scheduling and employee utilization should help keep the overall project on time.
