Electrical Construction Manager
An electrical construction manager is responsible for all aspects of electrical construction and installation in construction projects. The role of an electrical construction manager can vary from very basic to extremely involved, depending on the type of the construction project they are involved with.
An electrical construction manager for a home building project is normally a subcontractor, as home builders normally do not keep engineers on their regular staff. The role of the electrical construction manager in the case of home building is largely straightforward: shop for and purchase the electrical wiring requested by the home owner or home builder, develop an installation plan that meets the needs of the project and ensures safety and oversee the installation. The primary work will be the installation of electrical wiring in the walls in a way that does not interfere with other construction, the installation of sockets and the installation of fiberoptic cable for television, telephones and the Internet.
The electrical construction manager's job on a commercial building construction project, however, is a lot more complex. The amount of wiring can be 100 times or more than that in a house, with telephone lines, cables and other electrical systems adding to the difficulties. The electrical construction manager needs to work closely with other members of the construction team to lay out the location of where the wires will run through the walls and ceilings, as well as a schedule to ensure the installation of the electrical material does not interfere with other aspects of the project. There is also the task of making sure the building is connected to power lines or its own generator--or, in some cases, both, if the building requires a backup generator to keep vital operations going.
The most complex kind of project for an electrical construction manager is likely work on new construction projects in facilities like oil and gas plants or chemical facilities. The amount of electrical cable, wiring and insulation needed is massive, as there needs to be enough electrical circuitry to not only handle telephones and electricity, but huge and vitally important computer systems that keep the plants online. In this case, the electrical construction manager can be response for the fate of a project worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
