For hundreds of years, bricks have been used as one of the major materials used on the exterior of houses. Even in today's world of house construction, brick is commonly used in the United States and around the world. When it comes to house construction, brick is used for a number of reasons, including its good looks and durability. Brick can also be more expensive than other kinds of materials used on the exterior of houses, which may limit its use.

Most of the house construction brick used today is called "face" bricks, and are used as veneer on fame buildings. Nearly all homes built today are built off of a frame, which significantly reduces the number of bricks used on a modern house when compared to ones of a similar size 200 years ago. The brick veneer should be attached to the frame using a steel tie, which is a single-inch strip of sheet metal. The ties are nailed to the wood framing, then bent outward to cover the brick and attach to the mortar. Brick deterioration can happen as result of mortar deterioration as well, through a process called spalling. Spalling occurs when moisture is gets inside the brick, freezes and forces the brick to expand. Part of the brick will chip away as a result.

House construction brick used on the exterior is a certain kind of brick, built to be tough and durable. If another type of brick, less resistant to the elements is used, the brick can deteriorate over time by itself. In this case, those bricks must be removed before the entire structure is compromised.
