House Construction Framing

House construction framing is the part of the construction process where the skeleton of the home is assembled and raised. Until the house construction framing process is completed, work on the roof or the exterior of the house cannot begin. When the house construction framing is completed, work on the house is about one-third complete. House construction framing usually takes between two to three weeks on an average-sized home.

In most homes, the frame is primarily made of wood. When the house construction framing process is ready to begin, a platform or floor is built on the foundation. The structure is bolted to the foundation with anchor bolts; the walls are then placed on top of floor joists, followed by roof trusses. The subfloor is then attached to the joists with nails (or screws) and glue; once the walls are upright and bolted into place, the interior of the walls are covered with drywall and the exterior is covered with one of several different possible materials.

One the walls are in place, the next major step in the house construction framing process, the placement of the roof, can take place. The roof can be formed with pre-manufactured trusses (built off-site) or stick-built on-site. The trusses, if they are used, are hoisted onto the tops of the walls using a crane and fastened into place. The process of installing trusses is a short and normally uncomplicated one; the trusses are normally used as they can hold greater weight and have greater wind resistance. The material needed to build a stick-built roof is cheaper than trusses, but the amount paid for labor costs could make the weaker design material actually more expensive than the stronger one.

Once the trusses or stick-build roof frame is in place, the plywood that will serve as the base of the roof is installed. A weather proof covering is then placed over the plywood before the shingles are put on. The shingles are then nailed into place, completing the roof.
