House Construction Materials
House construction materials come a long way from the days of simple brick and mortar building. Today, there are many types of new construction material that a builder can choose from, depending on their requirements and budget.
The first house construction materials were basic ones, as the first builders were looking for the most plentiful material they could find. In some places, that new construction material was mud, as bricks could be made out of square pieces of mud and then dried. Buildings of this fashion were built in the Middle East, Africa and South America, among others. Adobe brick homes in the American Southwest were made in a similar fashion.
Wood was another one of the first house construction materials, as it was put to use in places where forests were plentiful. In places like Europe and North America, wood was prevalent enough to be used as a new construction material by many people--and, in some cases, still is today, though now it is considered a luxury material instead of a necessity.
While stone and other kinds of exotic masonry were used as home construction materials for the wealthy, brick and mortar became more commonly used during the 17th and 18th centuries. Brick remains among the most popular home construction materials in general use today, as it is both affordable and durable. In some regions of the United States, vinyl siding, a mass-produced material, is also common.
More recently, concrete has become a popular home construction material, for many of the same reasons brick did before. Because of its strength and staying power, concrete has become the primary material used for the creation of home foundations and is occasionally used for interior work as well..
As buildings have become larger and needed stronger support, steel and iron have become two of the new construction materials put to work. Steel has made its appearance as a home construction material recently, being used as part of the superstructure of some new and larger homes.
