International Construction Project

An international construction project can be far more complex than an average construction project simply due to the number of variables involved. In an international construction project, there can be differences in language, cultures, priorities and even measurement systems that must be overcome in order for the project to be a success.

One of the major issues to be dealt with in an international construction project is the basic one between the English and metric systems. Construction companies in the United States work with the English system, while nearly the rest of the world works with the metric system. If the two sides in question do not work out a plan early on about which system to use, disaster will almost certainly ensue.

An international construction project is led by a project manager, who is a professional in the field of project management. The project manager has the ultimate responsibility over the planning, execution and successful completion of the project. A critical element of construction project management is keeping the project on schedule and within the set budgetary parameters. In order to achieve these goals, the project manager must establish clear project objectives. Making sure these objectives can be understood by all sides is an important point, but one that is frequently overlooked.

A project manager is responsible for responding quickly to the changing needs of the client, no matter how they alter the size and scope of the project. This can be a difficult process; making changes to a project can affect its cost, the time needed to complete it, the number of employees needed to successfully complete the project and the quality of work done. Having the ability to adapt to abrupt changes requires forethought, preparation and, in many cases, a good rapport with the client. With an international construction project, developing that good report may not be as easy as it is with a regular construction project. Learning the manners and cultural niceties of the client's homeland could be an important element in keeping the project on track. Not showing the proper respect may not only throw the project off schedule, but lead to the firing of the contractor and the cancellation of the project.
