New Materials In Construction
With the invention of new technologies, new materials in construction have started to arrive on the marketplace. Some of these new materials in construction are used on the exterior of buildings, while others are used in the interior. These new materials in construction make the building process cheaper and more efficient.
Composites make up a number of new materials used in construction. Shape memory polymer composites can be reheated and reshaped to serve certain construction purposes without losing their high levels of strength and stiffness at normal temperatures. These composites can be used as the backbone of lightweight structures or reinforcement of larger structures.
A number of plastics qualify as new materials used in construction. Plastics are used for a number of purposes that can be largely overlooked, both in the interior and exterior construction phases. Many water and sewer pipes are now made of plastic and much of the rubber used in construction has a plastic base. Items like caulk also have plastic ingredients.
Fiberoptic cable is another one of the new materials used in construction. While homes for decades have been wired with cable for telephones and, later, cable television, fiberoptic cable has become commonly used over the past several years. This cable is the basis for high-speed Internet usage, as well as high-definition television.
Commonly used in the past in large-scale projects, steel is now becoming more frequently used in smaller and residential construction projects. Steel is now being used as the framework of houses and a number of commercial buildings, and is also being used as the framework for roofs as well. Steel had previously been neglected as a construction material for projects of a smaller scale due to price. With steel becoming more affordable, the strength and durability of the material has become more appealing to general contractors. With the adoption of new environmental standards like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), steel is also being used for previously unheard of uses, like massive outdoor shades, which reduce the amount of light coming into a building, which in turn help keep energy costs down.
