Residential Construction Academy
The Residential Construction Academy is a series of books, videos and DVDs that help novice home builders or those interested in joining the industry learn the tricks of the trade. The Residential Construction Academy series is based on national standards set by the residential construction industry and covers major subjects like carpentry, electrical, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), facilities maintenance and masonry.
Residential Construction Academy courses in carpentry include Level I standards for semi-skilled carpenters and Level II standards for more skilled carpenters. They cover wood framing, metal framing, exterior and interior trim, siding, drywall, insulation cabinets and countertops. The electrician skill courses are set up for Level I for semi-skilled electricians and Level II standards for more skilled electricians.
The Residential Construction Academy HVAC program covers eight HVAC areas: air conditioning, gas heat, oil heat, hydronic heat, electric heat, geothermal heat and air distribution. The residential plumbing standards are designed for second-year trainees and journeyman plumbers. It covers nine specialties: public water and sewer connections, private water and sewer connections, lift stations and sewage systems, water quality and filtration systems, solar systems, hydronic heating systems and boilers, gas piping, backflow protection and irrigation protection. Residential masonry and concrete standards have been developed for semi-skilled and skilled masons and cover 45 critical work functions for masonry and concrete. Residential facilities maintenance standards are laid out over three broad categories: applied academic skills, basic occupational skills and occupational specific skills.
The Residential Construction Academy series is recognized by educational institutions and industry training programs as being a high-quality source of construction industry-related information. In fact, many of them use the Residential Construction Academy series themselves. The series is scheduled to be available to students online in the near future, and will offer industry links, resources for a job search, video clips, review questions and sample tests and an online glossary of terms.
The Residential Construction Academy series is a partnership between the Home Builders Institute and Delmar Cengage Learning.
