Residential Wall Construction

Residential wall construction is a major part of the home construction process. Even though there is still more than half of a home still to be done when residential wall construction is completed, this step is the first visible sign that progress on a house is being made.

Residential wall construction is one of the first major steps taken once the foundation of the house, or the slab, is poured. The wall construction process actually begins on the ground, as the frame of the walls is assembled. Most of the frames of homes are made of varying types of wood, though some are now made of iron or stainless steel. Once the frames of the walls are assembled, they are uprighted into position and bolted down to the foundation with anchor bolts. These bolts are of enough thickness and strength to hold the fames in place throughout the life of the home.

The wall frames are placed on top of floor joists before they are fastened into position. Once they are properly fastened into place, additional work can be done to the walls. The exterior portion of the walls are covered with one of several different materials and insulated. The next step in the residential wall construction process is the attachment of the veneer, or the outside covering, of the house. The veneer can be vinyl siding, brick, stone or cement stucco. Each one requires a different step to attach it to the walls of the house.

On the inside, there is also work that needs to be done. Any electric wiring or pipes must be installed at this point, while the walls are still exposed. Once everything is installed inside the walls, drywall is used to seal the interior portions. Once the drywall has solidified, painting can be done.

At the top of the walls, part of the next step of construction can be found (if the walls are on the ground floor). Roof trusses are attached, so the frame of the roof can be fastened to the walls and held up. This final ensures that the construction of the roof goes smoothly.
