Wood House Construction

Wood house construction is one of the oldest forms of home construction in the history of the world. As trees have long been one of the most plentiful resources available to people in Europe, North America and South America, wood house construction has played a major role in the development of architecture and home building in many civilizations.

Even though some Native American tribes in the northeast of what would become the United States, its use as a construction tool greatly increased with the arrival of French and English settlers. Wood house construction was the basis of home building in the western portion of the United States (now known as Appalachia or the Midwest) during the 19th century. While it become less prominent as other construction methods have become more popular, wood house construction continues today.

Wood house construction was first used by American Indians before the Europeans arrived. When they did, many picked up the practice in locations like Jamestown and Plymouth due to the relative simplicity of construction and the lack of other materials. Wood house construction increased dramatically after the American Revolution, as citizens of the new United States began to travel westward. As they crossed over the Appalachian Mountains and into what is now Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee, settlers took advantage of the abundant timber to build their homes. President Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin; David Crockett and Daniel Boone also lived in them.

When Americans began to move into the Mexican territory of Texas, Wood house construction went with them. The first American settlements at Anhuac and Washington-on-the Brazos were almost entirely made of Wood house construction.

As brick, concrete and other kinds of wood construction gained popularity and become more prominent, Wood house construction began to decline in the second half of the 1800s. Today, Wood house construction makes up a small part of the home construction industry, but does indeed still exist.

Wood house construction is now far more advanced than it was 150 years ago, which may contribute to a renaissance. People looking for luxury second homes in places like Colorado or the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee have turned to Wood house construction. Instead of simple and rudimentary logs cut and bound together, these homes are elaborate and extremely well designed, thanks to modern building methods. Wood house construction is now a respectable alternative to brick and concrete, as the logs can be precisely cut and placed together to eliminate cracks that could let outside temperatures in. These impressive homes are truly beautiful, but are more expensive than their other counterparts as well.
