By refining crude oil/petroleum, gasoline is produced. Primarily, gasoline is a fusion of hydrocarbons that contain of hydrogen and carbon molecules. Hydrocarbon is in crude oil in various lengths of chains. They comprise with long and short chains of hydrocarbon and when the crude oil is refined, the refining process influences many petroleum products to be produced.

Gas, the smallest of the chains has one to five carbons, needs low temperature to boil while gasoline that has six to ten carbons boils next. The oil that has highest density level with 25 carbon molecules reaches the boiling point when the temperature is over 405 ?C degrees.

The first stage of producing gasoline starts with finding its base component, petroleum. Scientists are able to decide the areas of oil resources by taking various factors of the land surfaces into account. Mostly these areas have reservoir rocks, porous rocks etc. Examining these rocks and their surrounding, oil researchers can predict whether crude oil can be found in those certain areas.

The pressure inside the reservoir rock helps the oil from wells to be pumped into the pipes. The pipes are connected to a series of large pipes that take crude oil to the refineries. The oil/liquid and gas/non-liquid are piped in separately. This separation minimizes the wastage.

The crude oil taken from drilling contains many impurities and it is non-usable unless refined. The long atoms and the small atoms in crude oil should be separated in petroleum refineries to make it usable. The Fractional distillation is the method used to separate the molecules and produce different types of fuels from crude oil.

Normally a fractional distillation tower can hold more than 200,000 crude oil barrels. Crude oil is first input to a furnace and boiled at a temperature of 316 ?C degrees. This point of temperature helps evaporate the heaviest atoms. The vapors so produced rise through columns that are normally 150 feet high. The vapors condense as it rises to the top of the column at various levels. The less heavy molecules rises to the top while the heavier ones condensed at low levels of the columns. The lighter gasoline and kerosene condense at the top level of the column while heavy lubricants and plastics remain at the bottom. Gasoline is automated out from one of the top outlets of the fractional distillation column.
