Petrochemical Refining
Petro refers to non-renewable oil that is drilled or extracted from the earth. Chemicals on the other hand are man-made products as a result of molecular and atomic changes. Thus, petro-chemical is a chemical made from natural gas, oil, or any fossilized hydrocarbon. They can also be described as chemical products made using petroleum raw materials. Note however that some chemical compounds derived from petroleum can also be derived from other things such as natural gas or coal, although petroleum is the main source.
Refining, otherwise known as affining is the process of making pure a substance or a form. Note that refining takes place in a natural resource that is good to use in it form already, although it will be more useful when made pure. Petrochemical refining starts with the separation of crude oil into various fractions through the process of distillation. The fractions are then further treated and refined to convert them into more usable products by methods such as cracking, polymerization, reforming, isomerisation, and alkylation.
Petrochemical refining further separates the mixtures of the newly formed compounds using processes such as solvent extraction and fractionation. The impurities on the other hand are rid off through methods such as desalting, dehydration, hydrotreating, and sulphur removal.
Note that petrochemical refining only purifies the crude oil, but doesn't change its chemical composition. Thus, the final product will be identical chemically to the original product, but it will be more pure. Petrochemical refining has had a very dramatic impact in the food we eat, our shelters, clothing, and also leisure. The refining process of petrochemicals has made some synthetics, which have been customized for specific uses, to perform better than natural products due to the unique properties they become once the petrochemical refining process is complete.
Primary Petrochemicals include methanol, aromatics (tolune, benzene, and xylenes) and olefins (ethylene, butadiene, and propylene). Petrochemical intermediates and petrochemical derivatives are generally produced under petrochemical refining processes where the primary petrochemicals are chemically converted to form a more complex derivative product.
Petrochemical derivative products can be refined in a variety of ways: directly from the primary petrochemicals, via intermediate products, and via intermediate products which include oxygen, chlorine, and nitrogen in the end product. Of all the processes that petrochemical refining uses, the most crucial one is polymerization - the process used to refine petrochemicals into synthetic rubber, fiber, plastics, among other petrochemical finished products we use today.
