Star Petroleum Refining

The petroleum industry represents the world's largest exploration process as well as extraction and refining, every year resulting huge volumes of fuel, oil and gasoline also known as petrol. Petroleum is a very important raw material which is continuously contributing to other many industries which produce pharmaceuticals, chemical products, different solvents, pesticides, plastics or fertilizers.

As a definition, the petroleum is a mixture of crude oil and natural gas, which was formed in the ground millions of years ago. This raw material is extracted and processed by refineries which convert it into valuable products that most of industries depend on.

One of the most famous refineries is The Star Petroleum Refining Company. Based in Thailand, it was founded in 1996. Since then it supplies petrol, diesel and jet oil, lubricants to fields such as automotive, aviation, and marine industries. The Petroleum Refining Company is part of Caltex Trading and Transport Corporation. The produced oil is transferred to a province named Sriracha and from there to all over the country via pipe line networks, supplying all the customers with the needed oil.

The Star Petroleum Refining Company's annual production is over 26 billion litres.

It has a total of 12 diesel storage tanks, 11 jet fuel tanks, and 8 gasoline tanks. As it is continuously developing, and for safety measures also, this refinery has made some improvements in order to increase the safety of the production, but at the same time to decrease the costs. Hence the whole system of transfer operations has been fully automated.

The main task was to improve the efficiency of product transfer up to 100%. In other words, all the starting/stopping motors, the opening and the closing valves and the flow measurement were automated for higher efficiency. This system improvement has offered a safer activity and a smooth product transfer to all the customers involved.

For higher performances the system needed to operate without any interruption such as shutdowns, giving operators the possibility of controlling the flow daily for the whole year with the help of sophisticated software, using high graphic displays.

Maintaining the workflow functional is one of the company's main politics. Thus the operational knowledge is of a great importance. Every employee has to know how to work with the high technology and to permanently improve his/hers own skills.

All in all, it's a known fact that all refineries use the separation of crude oil into different segments using distillation. The parts are specially treated and the impurities are removed so as to obtain the products that the worldwide markets and industries` development depend on. The most important thing is to reduce as much as possible, the impact over the environment.
