Sulphur Refining
Sulfur or Sulphur, and sometimes even referred to as brimstone if you like, is a chemical non-metal element which is bright yellow in color when in its solid form. Sulphur mostly occurs as a pure element and as sulfide and sulfate minerals. It is commonly used in fertilizers but also in matches, black gunpowder, fungicides, and insecticides. Being a very essential element, it will be found in two major amino acids: - methionine and cysteine.
That said, sulphur refining is done mainly to convert its liquid form into a solid form suitable for marketing and transportation purposes. Note that liquid sulphur occurs as a by-product of the refining of natural gas when H2S is extracted from the main gas. Sulphur refining facilities are usually located in the immediate locality of a natural gas refining plant and in many cases are tied directly to the gas plant through a pipeline. The pipeline transports the sulphur in its liquid form directly from the natural gas plant to the sulphur refining facility.
There are generally two major processes used to refine sulphur - slating and prilling. Slating is the first process where the sulphur, in its liquid form, is poured on a conveyor belt which is partly dipped in water. As the liquid sulphur moves on the conveyor belt, it becomes cool and is hardened in the process. After getting hard, it is dropped on another belt, breaking it into different size pieces.
The second sulphur refining part is one that solidifies it into 'pellets', a process made successful by use of huge prilling towers. Liquid sulphur is sprayed on the top part of the prilling tower and by using fans, the droplets are solidified as they drop towards the bottom of the tower. Note that just in front the water-cooled stainless steel conveyor belt there would be another belt that will hold the still warm but already solidified prills which in turn moves them into storage.
Initially, sulphur refining was done by pouring the liquid form on the ground to form huge blocks. However, due to the evolution of automated refining methods and very strong marketability, the need for this form of refining which is quite time consuming has diminished considerably. Sulphur refining, like any other refining method, should be done under very high sanitary standards to ensure that the best and more pure form of sulphur solid is derived for commercial purposes i.e. manufacturing of fungicides, insecticides, fertilizers, and every other known work of sulphur.
