Zinc Refining

Zinc, otherwise known as spelter, is a metallic chemical element that is somehow similar in chemical composition to magnesium, since its ion is of the same size as that of magnesium. Sphalerite (Zinc sulfide) is the most common and most exploited zinc ore in the world today. The process of producing zinc entails ore froth flotation, roasting of the ore, and electrowinning - the final process of extracting zinc using an alectrolytic cell to reduce it into refinable form.

The process of purifying zinc to make a superior high quality zinc (SHG) is known as simply zinc refining. Once zinc refining is complete, the end product will be 99.995 per cent pure. Note however that zinc refining isn't really necessary when the zinc is smelt through the electrolysis process, but it becomes necessary when it is produced by the pyrometallurgical processes as it is always only 98.5 per cent pure.

There are a number of zinc refining methods, although the most commonly used method is the refluxing process. The refluxing process utilizes the comparatively low boiling point of zinc i.e. (907 ?C (1,665 ?F)). First off, the zinc refining process entails heating zinc in the first column to a point above its normal boiling point and then left to rise and settle in a condenser. Any impurities present will automatically sink to the bottom of the column either in liquid or solid form.

This composition will still have some traces of cadmium and lead in vapor form whereby lead will be removed through condensation of the vapor and the end product pumped in a cadmium column where it is cooled to an intermediate temperature slightly below the normal boiling point of zinc but above that of cadmium. Cadmium will exit from the top as vapor while zinc will exit as a refined liquid from the bottom.

Keep in mind though that zinc concentration normally takes place at the mining site before it reaches the zinc refining plant. Concentration is where crushing and flotation techniques are applied. At the plant is where the pyrometallurgical methods are applied to reduce zinc. Pure zinc is required worldwide in the industrial sector to avoid the zinc pest. Pure zinc is also consumed largely into slab format and other uses of zinc include galvanizing of steel, used in the automotive, electrical, construction, and machinery industrial processes. The compounds of zinc will mostly include paints, agricultural chemical products, rubber, and pharmaceuticals.
