Alternative Energy Canada

Canada has the highest number of renewable energy industries in the world. The country has been leading the world with its advancements in the industry of solar energy. The state of Ontario in Canada has long started the use of agricultural farmland for collecting solar energy. Recently the state also passed the Green Energy and Economy Act. This Act aims to implement more facilities for use of renewable sources of energy throughout the country. It also aims to bring more renewable sources of energy into the country. One of the efficiency measures adopted by the Act is to require homeowners to use only those appliances with Energy Star Rating, which will ensure maximum energy efficiency

Due to many high-pressure areas falling throughout the country, Canada enjoys a good many number of sunny days throughout the year. The country has therefore also been pushing for solar lighting in homes. Many residents in Canada have started to rely on solar power for lighting up their garages, tracks or porches, though the use of solar power alone for lighting of the entire house is yet to happen. There has been amazing developments and research done concerning the solar power. The University of Alberta is focusing on improving the efficiency of plastic cells to reduce costs and increase production. Alberta was already doing well in the wind power industry and is now paving the way for solar power. Canada is also seeking partnerships with countries all over the world to increase the consumption and generation of solar power.

The next alternative energy source that Canada is trying to harness is geothermal energy. Canada, along with the US and the Philippines has signed the Kyoto Protocol. The protocol aims at eliminating greenhouse gases in general but Canada is using it to encourage production of geothermal energy. Manitoba is one location in Canada that has been identified for this purpose. The hydroelectric industry in Canada is led by Quebec. This renewable energy produces 90% of Quebec’s electricity. Hydro-Quebec is the world’s largest hydroelectric company. It has a network of 52 dams and 1 nuclear plant. 92% of the power supply distributed by Hydro-Quebec is from hydroelectricity. Since the 1970’s, hydropower development has become quite slow in Canada, however they are still world leaders in the production and use of hydroelectricity as a renewable source.
