Alternative Energy Fuel

Energy is one of the most important resources on the Earth today. It is required in each and every sphere of life. Scientists are trying to identity new sources of energy. The atomic energy, the solar energy, the wind energy, the thermal energy are some steps in this direction. New sources of petroleum are being explored; however the success of this again depends upon the use of advanced scientific methods. There are various sources of energy. Some of them are mentioned below:

Fossil fuels – Any substance which on burning produces a lot of heat is called a fuel. Wood, coal, kerosene are some examples of fuels. Fossil fuels are formed from the remains of plants and animals which got buried millions of years ago. Coal and petroleum are called fossil fuels.

Petrol, diesel and kerosene are obtained from petroleum. For household purposes energy is obtained by burning fuels such as kerosene, oil, coal and wood and LPG. Petrol and diesel are used in cars, scooters, tractors, trucks, diesel train engines, aeroplanes, motors and other vehicles as fuels to produce energy.

Coal is also used to generate electricity in thermal power stations. Do you know what a thermal power station is? It is a place where electricity is generated by burning coal.

Water - The energy of running water is used to generate electricity in hydel power stations. The energy of running water is also used to run water-mills or to transport timber from one place to another.

Wind energy – Wind energy is used in certain parts of our country to run windmills. These windmills in turn are used to generate electricity and hence to pump water. Wind is also used by the farmers for winnowing crops.

Tidal waves- The energy from the sea waves or tides is used on some parts of the world to generate hydroelectric power.

Biomass – Garbage, industrial waste, crop residue, sewage, wood bushes, cow dung and other waste materials form biomass. Biomass is decomposed in the absence of oxygen to produce methane gas which can be used as a fuel and the residue can be utilized as manure for plants.

Atomic energy – Elements are made up of atoms. These atoms have a lot of energy stored in them. This energy is used in atomic power stations to produce electricity. Huge amount of atomic energy is released during the explosion of an atom bomb or hydrogen bomb. Even the Sun gets its heat and light energy from reactions involving atoms.
