With energy and oil prices at an all time high, many are scrambling in search for alternative energy sources to fossil fuel. Fossil fuel is limited, and with its short supply and is slowly being depleted, many are now looking into alternative energy. Alternative energy, also known as renewable energy, such as wind, solar, and water, is a natural source of energy and will never be depleted. With the help of technology, alternative energy system is designed to harness renewable energy and deliver it to homes and offices. There are several systems available.

Solar energy system, such as solar electric panel, is an alternative energy system used to harness the natural source of sunlight. This is the most cost-effective and simplest way to collect renewable energy source. Heat energy obtained from the sun can be used in different ways, such as producing hot water for household use, and to passively heat the buildings. Using solar energy reduces dependence of fossil fuels for producing energy, thus reducing carbon emissions. Carbon emissions contribute to global warming, which is a great environmental issue. By using the solar panel system, average household can greatly reduce carbon emissions.

Wind energy system, such as wind turbine, is another alternative energy system. It harnesses the natural wind power, and converts wind energy into kinetic energy. The kinetic energy is then used to generate electricity. Generation of electricity through wind turbines is one of the most energy-efficient and cost effective of clean energies. Wind energy is one of the cleanest forms of producing power from a renewable source. Wind turbines can be used for direct heating and charging batteries. However, the effectiveness of wind turbines also depends on how windy the location is. When the wind is blowing, the wind turbine covers the electrical demands of the household.

Hydropower system, such as hydroelectric turbine, is another form of alternative energy system. Hydropower is produced from flowing water passing through hydroelectric turbine, which generates electricity. Hydropower is usually produced at large dams. Operating wave and tidal power plant is another alternative energy system, which taps on the ocean energy. The wave power plant captures water from waves in a dam, and lets the water out through a turbine. Electricity is generated as tidal flows move back and forth through the turbines.

Renewable energy has many advantages. As fossil fuels, such as natural gas and oil, become scarce, they will become more expensive. Using renewable energy, no matter how it is produced or where it comes from, is the most economical.
