Electrical Energy Sources

Electrical energy can be obtained from different sources. Generally, electrical energy is obtained by converting some other form of energy. This conversion will surely be accompanied by a considerable loss. Some of the most important direct and indirect sources of electrical energy are discussed here.

The most important source of electrical energy is coal. The heat generated by burning coal is used to generate electrical energy. But, this energy is accompanied with lots of risks. When coal is burned, lots of green house gases are released which will gradually lead to global climatic changes. Continuous use of coal will soon lead to its depletion.

The next important source of electrical energy is water. The force of water falling from a considerable amount of height is used to drive turbines, which in turn generates electrical energy. This energy is also commonly known as hydro electric energy. Hydro electric power has been in use from the past and will continue to be used in future because its source is water, which can never be depleted.

Electrical energy can also be generated using the force of wind. The equipment used for the purpose of converting wind energy into electrical energy is termed as wind turbine. These wind turbines are constructed along sea shores and other places where there is a steady flow of wind.

Another important source of electrical energy is the sun. The sun’s heat is trapped by using many devices like solar panels, solar cells, etc. and is then converted into electrical energy. Sun is a never ending source of heat and so once the set up is complete, we will get a steady supply of electrical energy.

Geothermal energy derived from the heat of earth can also be converted to electrical energy. This is done through the use of turbines which can be run with the help of hot steams that comes out of hot volcanoes, springs, etc.

Electrical energy can also be generated from radioactive substances like Uranium, etc. This energy is termed as nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is generated using fission process. This is a very dangerous process and could even cause the destruction of an entire city if done carelessly. It also releases lots of radio active waves which can cause serious health disorders. Also, radioactive substances are very expensive and are available in scarce amounts. So, it cannot be used indefinitely and care should be taken not to deplete it.
