Energy Management Controls

Energy management controls are systems implemented to control the operation of a building so that it can function more effectively and efficiently. The overall intention is to provide information on the current functions, and make recommendations to improve the current functions and practices. This results in a better quality of life, and energy efficient building facilities. It involves discovering new and better ways to save energy, and thereby reducing overall energy costs.

Energy management controls are implemented in businesses that want smarter energy management strategies, as energy costs continue to rise and it has no indication of letting up anytime soon. With this management control, businesses, even while it is growing, can lower their operating costs which result in a wider profit margin. It is beginning to gain a foothold for maintaining global competitiveness as it is one of the most effective ways to control energy costs. What are the key areas for energy management controls implementation?

One of the main key areas is people. Every employee in the company plays an important role for energy use. Training and imparting employees with motivation and skills to take part in energy efficiency can lead to vast improvements in the organization’s energy costs. Create the awareness in them of the benefit of energy efficiency, and train them to manage energy for greater effectiveness and productivity. Greater productivity and savings for businesses may transform into higher salaries and incentives for the employees. Businesses can hand out some form of awards or incentives to employees for being the ‘most energy-efficient’ employee!

Another key area of energy management controls is the manufacturing systems. This key area is to help businesses understand the manufacturing system efficiencies, and make improvements to the energy consumption with pumps, motors, engines, etc. Improving a system’s reliability greatly improves energy efficiency, and thereby reducing energy costs. Greater efficiency reduces the wear and tear from heat of these machines, and prolongs the lifespan of equipment. This reduces the down time or idle time required for repairs and maintenance. Energy management controls help avoid energy inefficiencies of these equipments, which might otherwise destroy these equipments.

Measuring or tracking the energy consumption is another key area of energy management controls. By measuring the energy consumed against the budget, businesses can easily gauge how much energy is being used and implement control measures, if necessary. They can also track their energy savings.
