Heat And Light Energy

Different forms of energy can do different types of work. You can see, hear and feel some of these forms everyday. For example, electrical energy flows through cables and wires into equipments and machines such as lamps, electric cookers, televisions and food mixers. It makes them work. These equipments change the electricity into other forms of energy. Some materials, such as wood and petrol, store chemical energy until it is released. It can be done by burning the material, to give heat and light.

Energy exists in many forms and can be changed from one form to another. Although we say we use energy, it is never used up and destroyed, it only transforms from one form to the other.

We use different forms of energy to work on machinery to make our lives easier. The energy may change from one form to another, but the total amount of energy always remains the same. Even the sun gets it heat and light energy from reactions involving atoms.

Heat energy – Take a container with water. Cover it with a lid. Heat it till the water starts boiling. You will see that the lid moves up and downs when the water boils. It is due to the heat energy of the steam. James Watt invented the steam engine taking a clue from this experiment.

Light energy – When the light falls on a photographic film, a chemical change takes place and an image of the object is formed on the film. This change needs energy. Thus light is a form of energy. However, it does not normally have enough energy to move heavy objects. Light energy of the sun is converted into electrical energy with the help of solar cells.

Some of the other forms of energy are:

Chemical energy – Take a match stick, strike it against a match box. It burns and gives us heat and light. There is energy locked in the molecules of its compounds. When these molecules take part in chemical reaction, apart of this energy is released. This energy is called chemical energy. The chemical energy of petrol and diesel is used to run cars and trucks. On switching on a torch, the chemical energy stored in the cell appears as heat and light. Wood, coal and kerosene also have chemical energy stored in them.

Electrical energy – When you switch on a heater, electric current passes into it and the heater gives you heat and light and energy. Hence electricity is also a form of energy.
