Home Solar Energy Systems
Solar energy is a renewable form of energy, which means that the energy, which is derived from sunlight, is replenished naturally by nature, as sunlight is abundant. Solar energy will soon replace fossil fuel resources in powering domestic homes as solar energy is free and renewable and the increase in demand is making it affordable to install in homes. Soon every home will work on solar energy.
A survey reveals that the total solar energy absorbed by the surface of the earth including the landmasses, the oceans and the atmosphere in a span of just one hour is more than the total global energy utilized in the year 2002. The energy i.e., heat and light energy from the sun is taken and converted into electric energy and utilized in homes.
A positive aspect of solar power systems is that they keep producing electricity as long as the sun shines. If every single home in the world had a system, we would never run out of energy! The technology behind the solar power systems given to homes is solar cells, or, in other words photovoltaic cells, which convert the energy of the sun into direct electricity. These solar cells are arranged on a panel called the ‘solar panel’.
The geographical area of a home decides the type of panel to be installed in that particular home. There are two types of panels: 1) concentrating solar collectors and 2) non-concentrating solar collectors. The concentrating solar collectors are the ones, which are useful in homes, which receive a lot of direct sunlight hence, these, are angled in an optimal way so as to absorb all the direct sunlight. Whereas, non-concentrating solar power collectors are the ones, which absorb direct as well as reflected sunrays.
Solar power systems can be used to produce electricity in homes and can also be used to heat homes. It can also be used to heat swimming pools. The advantages of solar power systems are that it is affordable as sunlight is free. It is also environment friendly. The disadvantages of solar power systems are that the amount of power depends on the amount of sunlight. If there is no sunlight there is no power generated. Secondly, if homes situated in areas that receive a lot of sunlight generate excessive power, they cannot sell the extra energy to the power companies unless they have invertors that convert DC current into alternating current.
