Lighting Energy Management
Lighting consumes a big bulk of our utility bills. As energy costs and oil prices continue to head north, the figures on their utility bills are also inching their ways upwards. Many people and corporations are scrambling to find ways to cut down on the increasing costs. Taking a look at lighting expenses is a great start as lighting plays a big part in our lives. Many have incorporated, or are incorporating lighting energy management as part of their cost control measures. What is lighting energy management and what are the strategies?
Lighting energy management is the implementation of methods to minimize the excess energy which is emitted from lighting, and thereby controlling unnecessary energy costs and protecting the environment from the harmful effects at the same time. Inefficient lighting plays a negative part in the environment. It requires the burning of large quantities of fossil fuels, which causes global warming and acid rain, which is a great threat in the world today. Therefore, having the right lighting system not only lowers the electricity bills, it makes the environment more conducive as well. There are several different methods which can be implemented for lighting efficiency.
One of the methods of lighting energy management is to use compact fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent lighting is the most energy-efficient and cost-effective lighting. It is suitable for most homes, offices and buildings. Compact fluorescent lighting uses 75 percent less energy and can last much longer than inefficient lamps. It provides significant cost savings.
Another method to lighting energy management is to use halogen lamps. Halogen lamps are more energy-efficient, and offers longer life compared to traditional lamps. They can save you up to 45 percent of energy which transforms into great savings for you. Although halogen lamps are more expensive than conventional type of lamps, the savings to your electrical bills yearly cannot compare to their costs.
Controlling the lighting used is also another lighting energy management method. It involves ensuring that lights are used only when needed or necessary. Use natural daylight during day-time, and use the lighting during night times. This method can provide great cost savings by ensuring that energy is not consumed unnecessarily.
There are many other methods to improve lighting efficiency with lighting energy management, such as consider using desk lamps, reducing the overall brightness in the room to enhance computer screen visibility, etc. All these measures can go a long way in helping you lower your utility bills significantly!
