Renewable Energy Engineer is someone who works mainly in the natural energy resource field. The main role and responsibility includes the sourcing of solar, wave, and wind power. He/she must possess an expertise in electronic, electrical, and mechanical and civil engineering. They usually hold a senior position, and he/she either leads a team of energy engineers, or holds a main post in this team. They are involved in developing, and maintaining machineries and power stations that are used in sourcing and production of energy. They usually work with building service engineers, architects, sales and service engineers to ensure correct product applications, and product benefits are well communicated. They develop sales tools, and brief and train the sales force at meetings on product developments.

Renewable Energy Engineer is responsible for designing renewable energy system solutions for contractors and architects. He/she builds such equipments designed by his/her team of engineering designers, and conducts tests and make modifications before installing and running the equipments for clients. All these testing and modifications involve extensive use of computer technology. They are also responsible for the operation and the maintenance of existing equipments to determine their effectiveness. They will have the responsibility to upgrade the technologies used in these equipments accordingly if they are found to be ineffective. They also fit technologies into an existing plan to develop clean and cheap energy.

A renewable energy engineer’s work can take place outdoors or indoors. For working indoors, most of the time, they will be working in a laboratory, workshop, or in a power station. These places may be cramped or hot, and involve strict procedures, such as wearing protective clothing.

Renewable energy engineer is a complex job. It takes interest, perseverance, and determination to overcome the challenges you may face in this position. Therefore, if you are interested in becoming a renewable energy engineer, you must be interested in science and technology. You should have an analytical mind and a logical approach when it comes to solving problems, and have relevant technical skills and the ability to work accurately and efficiently. As you are required to head a team of engineers and architects, you must possess managerial and communication skills. And the most important of all: possess normal colour vision.
