Renewable Energy Sources

Since the discovery of fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal, the world ignored other forms of energy until the petroleum reserves started showing signs of depletion prompting man to start considering other sources of energy as a back up measure. Both petroleum and coal are non renewable and this has created a major concern for many people in the energy sector.

As the energy demand in the world continue to increase at a high rate due to increased industrial activity as well as human population, the need for renewable energy sources has become even more critical. As human population continues to increase, most of the natural resources that have been used by man for a long time have become almost depleted. Many people are faced with the challenge of coming up with renewable energy sources to eradicate the fear of an energy crisis incase the non renewable sources run out soon.

Renewable sources of energy are available in many versions ranging form the all time popular hydro power to wind, solar and other minor sources such as biomass, biogas among many more in the world. The main advantage of the renewable sources of energy as compared to the fossil fuels is in the fact that they are associated with very low pollution as compared to the petroleum products. The other factor that should encourage us to go for the renewable sources is that you should not be worried about the possibility of running out of reserves at all.

As much as the renewable energy sources do not run out as compared to the fossil fuels, it is very important to note that most of the sources are influenced by natural weather conditions and we must therefore ensure that we do not destroy our environments as this may affect the renewable energy sources in a major way. Think of hydro electric power which is generated along rivers, if the human activities in a certain area affect the rivers’ catchments, the rivers may dry out leaving the turbines at the hydro electric plant with no water to run on. The result would be a complete blackout for all areas that rely on the hydro power from the particular river.

This should be a wake up call for human beings to try and make sure that their activities do not end up costing them too much than they can actually afford to pay for during their entire life times.
