Renewable Energy Systems

Wind and sun top the list of renewable energy sources as two of the best basic sources for energy.  As with all things, there are pros and cons where solar and wind energies are concerned.  Consumers must weigh advantages and disadvantages when they are thinking of converting to renewable energy systems.  Demand for energy has escalated due to the increase in population and industrialization.  Consumers are likely to deplete primary energy resources such as coal, natural gas, and oil.  These fuels can emit harmful carbon gases into the environment.  Many governments and scientists blame the emission from these fuels for the climate changes and ecological disasters.  Solar energy and wind power are both free from releasing these emissions into the environment and are environmentally safe. 

The different types of energy that can be gained from the sun is concentrated solar power and thermal or heat energy.  Wind turbines transform kinetic energy to mechanical power, which is used to power generators, water pumps and other devices that use electrical energy.  Photovoltaic or solar cells gather heat from the sun on glass plates then transfer it to a storage tank, where it is used to heat water for home usage. 

The most obvious advantage of solar and wind energy is the fact that both are renewable resources.  The wind will continue to blow and the sun will continue to burn.  Both are sustainable and neither is a pollutant.  Wind driven power is already a technology that has been proven. Wind farms are sprouting up everywhere and will soon be used for business and regional purposes.  Solar energy does not pollute and is much quieter than any fossil fuel driven energy.  After your initial investment gets recouped when installing solar panels, the energy produced will be free.  Solar panels are most usually installed directly on rooftops. 

Some challenges that presented by using these renewable resources are that wind energy relies on the wind for power and when the wind is not blowing, there must be battery backup.  Battery backup is very costly and the batteries must be replaced occasionally.  The only disadvantage for solar power is the cost of having the solar panels installed.  The solar panels will eventually pay for themselves but they are very expensive to get started.  Another disadvantage to solar panels might be that pollution may hinder the sun gaining access to the solar panels, and the sun does not always shine.
