* Research - Research the process and materials needed to convert your home with solar power systems.  Make a list with important questions to ask a company representative when speaking with them.

* Locate local solar power companies - When selecting a local company you will save money on shipping and handling expenses, for the necessary materials.

* Interview - call each company and ask for an interview where you can speak with a representative who will be able to answer the questions you have written down.  Ask them questions about their company as well, like their experience in the business and their experience with the materials you are interested in using.  Ask for names, phone numbers, and addresses of past customers so that you can speak with them about the company.

* Better Business Bureau - Go to your local BBB to see if the company has any pending litigations or complaints.  This information is public information and will save you a headache later if the company has viable complaints or lawsuits pending you will definitely want to go with a different company.

* Drive by - the homes that have used the business for their solar systems to see what the finished product looks like and how it actually works.

* Compare - Compare pricing of all the companies that you are interested in, this is one way to weed out an inexperienced or illegal company, by the price. 

Most companies will come to your home and offer an estimate for the job at hand.  The representative will tell you what options they have available for you to choose from and go over any questions you may have.  The representative may not give you the estimate that day but instead need to figure out the approximate materials list and other items needed for the job.  They may require a call back to you with the actual estimate 24 to 48 hours later.  Keep in mind that your objective here is to save money you may be tempted to go with the improved solar power system but have a need for a much smaller one.
