Solar Energy Definition

What is Solar Energy?

Solar energy is the energy that is created from the rays of the sun. Where does the sun get its energy? It is from itself. Sun is basically a huge ball of fire which has lots of gases mainly, hydrogen and helium. When the atoms of hydrogen combine with one another, they produce helium and then that helium produces solar energy through nuclear fusion. Now let us see some of the important facts relating to solar energy.

1. Solar energy is the energy from the sun that is converted into thermal energy or electrical energy.

2. To convert this sunlight into electricity or energy, there is a certain machine used which is called the solar photovoltaic.

3. These photovoltaic’s are pretty thin, metal sheets which use the heat from the sun to transform into electricity which is then ultimately used for our day to day activities.

4. These PVs come in different sizes and shapes ranging from space satellites to emergency roadside telephones.

5. To make the solar energy work, you need a solar panel. Now what are these panels? These panels are a rectangular piece of board made from a semi-conductor usually made from silicone.

6. When photons from light strike the semiconductor, electrons are knocked loose from their atoms and are collected and turned into direct electricity.

7. Solar energy was invented by a scientist called Edmund Becquerel in 1838 when he was worried that the revolution period would deplete all the natural resources that is available to mankind. Later in 1860, Auguste Mouchout designed first motor working on solar energy. And then the rest is history.

8. The first solar panel was used in 1979. NASA wanted to use solar energy for its electrical devices but had wireless devices at their disposal so they just couldn’t make use of it.

9. Today home builders are building homes keeping in mind the space needed for solar panels implementation in the future.

10. A solar plant with the capacity of 75MW can light up an area giving space to almost 40,000 homes.

11. In Washington DC, each year major universities have a solar house competition. Whoever builds a house that can power the house as well as an electric car, wins. The best one I mean.

12. It is assumed by the year 2015, there would be many corporate houses and buildings that would have their own solar system for both heat and electrical energy.

13. Buildings and important establishments have been using solar energy for more than two thousand years now.

14. Solar energy is one of the fastest growing sources of energy. It is growing at the rate of almost 40 percent a year.
