Solar Energy Disadvantages

Solar energy is energy which comes from the sun. It is one major natural resource we can take advantage of. We know of many advantages of using solar energy to generate electricity, such as it is free, and its source is never ending as long as the sun is there, and it saves the environment. There are also disadvantages of solar energy as cited below.

One of the disadvantages, in fact the major disadvantage, is the cost of collecting the sun’s energy. In order to collect the energy, equipments such as solar panels are used. These solar panels, which are designed to generate electricity from solar energy, are very expensive to produce. In order to power a number of homes, large solar panels are needed, instead of small solar panels which can only generate a small amount of electricity. The initial cost of the equipment is one major disadvantage.

Another one of solar energy disadvantages is that it is only useful if there is a lot of sunlight, and when the sun is shining. This means that electricity cannot be generated from solar energy during the night. The expensive solar energy panel that you invested in cannot be used, and rendered useless at night. Simply put, if there is no sun, there is no power. This means that you will need to have standby batteries at night. Also, some parts of the world do not receive as much sunlight as other parts of the world. Therefore, these areas where they do not receive as much sunlight are not suitable for solar energy generation. Imagine this: what the world will be like when everything is solar energy powered. The world will plunge into darkness when night time comes, and there will be chaos everywhere, traffic lights do not work and accidents happening everywhere!

The position or location of solar panels used to collect energy from the sun is one of the solar energy disadvantages. As the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the changing position of the sun throughout the day can affect the performance of the solar panels, which can be caused by the obstructions from the buildings surrounding these panels. To maximize its performance, these solar panels will have to be adjusted throughout the day, according to the sun’s position, to maintain a direct angle with the sun. And to do that, a system will have to be implemented to do the turning of the solar panels.
