Solar Energy Electricity

The Sun lights up the World. It heats it and helps in the growth of all living things on Earth. The power that every sector gets is directly or indirectly linked with the Sun. Its limitless energy has now been harnessed, to generate a new source of renewable energy through new technologies since the industrial revolution and at present, solar energy electricity accounts for a considerable amount of the World's total electricity production.

Solar energy is the key renewable energy on Earth. When we harness solar energy, we don't have to use natural resources in the World like we do now with other resources such as coal and petroleum. Sun gives out an abundant amount of energy and if the need and necessary equipment is there, we can produce enough solar energy electricity without major setbacks.

Solar-thermal and photovoltaic (PVC) technologies are the two systems that help convert solar energy to electricity. Photovoltaic (PV) was first introduced three decades ago for space programs. PV cells are tiny square silicon semiconductors made up with other materials as well. When they are exposed to sunlight, its responds to it chemically and this process produces electricity. The small quantity of electricity produced with an individual photovoltaic cell when it links with the modules is capable enough to power homes and businesses. By increasing the PV cells and using electricity grids to plug them, the quantity of electricity produced is increased considerably.

On the other hand Solar-thermal technology is a conventional method to produce electricity from the Sun's heat. Within this system, heat of the sunrays used to generate steam that powers electric generators. In California, reflectors are used to absorb sunlight to heat oil, which in turn produces steam to power turbines.

Besides these two solar energy systems, another two methods are now in use. They are parabolic dish systems and central receiver systems. With the parabolic dish system sunlight helps to heat helium or hydrogen to produce intensified steam or gas that powers steam turbines to produce solar energy electricity while with central receiver systems, mirrors are used to reflect sunlight to huge towers where fluid is contained and when they heat up due to sunlight it helps create steam to power turbines.

Generating solar energy electricity had its draw backs as it necessitated vast extents of land to install the equipment. This has now been resolved considerably with installation on roofs and similar areas which need hardly any space. It is said that manufacturing of PV cells creates some hazardous elements to the environment as well as human. But these problems are negligible when compared with the benefits that the World can have from the production of solar energy electricity than with other systems.
