Solar Energy Science Projects

Solar energy is the energy of tomorrow. There are a number of experiments conducted around the world by different scientists to tap this enormous amount of energy. Even you as students can conduct experiments with this solar energy and impress your teachers.

These experiments are very simple and at the same time very easy to conduct. So kids, get ready to have your own solar energy experiments work wonder for you in the science projects competition where you can display your talent and bring laurels to yourself.

The first experiment is based on the concept that the darker colors absorb more energy than the lighter ones. The underlying principle for this project is that the more the dark is the color of any surface the more it can absorb the solar energy which in turn can be used to heat any food material as in the case of the solar cooker or the same concept can be applied to heat the water with the help of solar heater.

Project 1:

Requirements: - Two shoeboxes are the foremost thing required for conducting this experiment. You will also need two colors preferably black and white. You will require cardboard sheets and aluminum foil for lining the interior of the boxes, a thin clear plastic sheet to wrap the boxes and a thermometer to measure the temperature change. Other stationary items required for this experiment are scissors for cutting and glue for pasting purpose.

FIRST:  With the help of glue, paste several layers of cardboard inside the shoeboxes. This is done to provide the insulation, which will ultimately slow down the process of heat loss. One important point to remember is that same amount of insulation is to be done in both the boxes.

SECOND: Now paste the aluminum foil to the bottom of the two boxes. Then paint one box with black color and the second box with the white color.

THIRD: Let the paint dry for some time. Then take the plastic sheet and attach this to both the boxes.

Procedure:

Take both the boxes and keep them in the sun for the same amount of time. Before placing these boxes measure their temperature and record the same as the initial temperature. Then after placing these boxes in the sun, measure their temperature after sometime.

You will find that there is a huge amount of disparity between the temperatures of both the boxes.
