Decomposition Of Hydrogen Peroxide
From the University of Virginia Physics Department, a decomposition of hydrogen peroxide has been introduced to help teachers aid their students to better understand the amazing and wondrous gas of hydrogen. This decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was found to be an excellent source to teach and understand hydrogen and its properties.
It is also done because students need to receive certain skills when it comes to the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. For instance, the first thing they need to learn is to use a glowing splint to analyze the gas and its flammability and to analyze its relative density. Also they will gain practice in observing, identifying and interpreting any results. Another useful thing they can obtain is the ability to balance and write out the chemical equation for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.
However, that is not everything whatsoever. The students also learn how to observe and explain the particle model of matter when the volume expands by the reactants when a gas is introduced; lower the activation energy when a chemical is introduced; watch during a decomposition reaction a chemical change. And last but not at least they will recognize an important indicator when the change occurs.
The materials needed are also of great importance. Not only do the students have to know what materials they need but they also have to be familiar with how to use them, what each of them serves for and where they can get it from. So here is what they practically need: large test tube; a large solid cork or rubber stopper; matches; several wooden splints; a small amount of yeast; 3% of a hydrogen peroxide solution and last but not at least- goggles for safety measures.
And the only thing which you need to be informed about now is what procedure is and how the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide actually happens. So the first thing to be done is to pour about a quarter of the large test tube with the 3% hydrogen peroxide solution and analyze the liquid. After that, the students have to add the yeast and shake the test tube until thoroughly mixed and cork the test tube with the solid cork or rubber stopper. The next step to be taken is to test the gas bubbles that are foaming from the hydrogen peroxide solution by adding flame; then by the wooden splints. Keep relighting the splints until the reaction stops. Here is where the practical assignment actually ends. The next thing to do is based mainly on the theory: students are trying to connect what they see with what they know (known as observation and analysis).
