Density Of Hydrogen

Hydrogen is one of the many chemical elements which could be seen on the Mandalay’s Table. What you are most likely to know about it is that hydrogen is the first of the chemical elements on the Table (so its atom number is “1”) which means an atom of hydrogen has got one proton and one electron. As you probably remember from the chemistry classes, the number of neutrons can vary which determines the existence of different isotopes. Anyway, as a chemical element, hydrogen has got lots of physical characteristics: density of hydrogen, melting point, boiling point and many others.

You may not have thought about it but most of the physical characteristics have something to do with the usage of a chemical element. Let’s take some simple example so that the statement is proved. For example, the aluminum’s light weight is the reason why it is used for manufacture of planes and other types of aircrafts; the steel’s hardiness is why it is used for manufacturing strong and unbreakable items. Those were just examples but they served for just delivering the idea to you and making you realize what it is all about.

Obviously, what should be done now is take a closer look at the hydrogen’s physical characteristics and the density of hydrogen in particular. Why does the density deserve some more attention? Unsurprisingly, that’s because it is the main characteristic which determines the various usages of the element. Yes, you might say: “How about the melting and boiling temperature”. Yes, that’s certainly important but as hydrogen is a gas, it is not used for producing any ‘touchable’, ‘visible’ and ‘material’ items so its temperature of melting and boiling really does not an important role in most of the cases.

However, the same could not be said about the density of hydrogen. It is the density which determines the hydrogen’s appliance as fuel which is far more efficient than the traditional ones such as diesel or methane. It is also the density which makes the hydrogen so helpful when flying. Perhaps, you know that there used to be dirigibles which used to be used as planes but since the hydrogen is extremely flammable, dirigibles are no longer used (there was a big tragedy about that by the way, which caused the death of hundreds of men, women and children). And, of course, there is more to say about the density of hydrogen- for instance, it’s good to know it’s a sixteenth of the air’s density.
