Hydrogen Conversion
For some time now, scientists and engineers have been working together side by side in trying to manufacture the perfect hydrogen conversion engine. This is definitely not an easy task but nor is it a difficult one. Hydrogen is extremely flammable and extraordinary care is given when dealing with such an explosive gas. Hydrogen conversion kits have become available to the public which can be applied to engines that are fueled by gasoline. It’s been very productive and successful and it’s now in question if diesel fueled engines can convert to hydrogen as easily as gasoline engines.
It’s been stated many times over that hydrogen fueled cars and other forms of transportation would cost much less than just gasoline engines. The problem with that statement is that there aren’t many hydrogen fuel stations around. Many people believe that hydrogen fueled vehicles run on water and filling the fuel tank using the garden hose is all it takes. This isn’t necessarily the case. It’s a bit more complicated than that but it’s not that far from the actual truth. Although water is two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen (H20) the process of hydrogen conversion is a difficult one. The main reason converting an engine to run on hydrogen is that it gives off much less pollution – if any at all.
The USAF is very interested in hydrogen conversion. In fact, rumors have been going around since 1979 that the USAF is constructing a “spy plane” that runs strictly on hydrogen. This would make it hard to spot and track because since it doesn’t give off any detectable gases in its exhaust it doesn’t leave a trail behind. The name given to this “top-secret” plane is the Aurora. This plane is to take the place of the SR-17 stealth reconnaissance plane that was able to travel Mach 3. The Aurora is supposedly able to travel Mach 4 at an altitude of 200,000 feet but there were reports of this plane being able to reach Mach 6. That’s six times the speed of sound. The reason of SR-71’s termination was supposedly based mainly on cost. Operating and maintaining an SR-71 costs nearly 710 million dollars each a year. Plus, it’s been argued that nowadays, satellites with imaging capabilities can easily do reconnaissance missions for far much less than manned aircraft. It’s said that 30 of these Aurora planes would cost a total of only a little more than 4 billion dollars for the entire fleet.
