Hydrogen Electrode

A conductor through which an electric current is passed is known as an electrode. Examples of electrode are carbon, platinum, gold, and rhodium. By adsorbing hydrogen onto a platinum electrode hydrogen electrode is created, that is then set to zero potential and used to match up to other results.

It is chosen as a reference standard, comparative to which potentials of other electrodes and oxidation-reduction couples are frequently expressed. Also, it is used only in basic studies and some no aqueous solutions. However the hydrogen electrode remains important for providing a reference standard.

A hydrogen electrode needs to pass a hydrogen gas over a Platonized platinum sheet. TheStandardHydrogenElectrode abbreviated as SHE is easy to define, but not suitable to apply thoroughly. It is widely used as an indicator electrode to determine the pH values. Depending on the nature of the half cell SHE could be used in both ways as an anode or cathode. Hydrogen electrode is based on the red ox half cell.

At the same temperature the potentials of other electrodes are compared with that of the standard electrode. The standard electrode is known at a charge of 0 volts and serves as a medium for any cell potential calculation. We can also that an electrode used as a standard against which other electrodes are measured with a standard electrode potential of zero. The Standard Electrode is also sometimes called Normal Electrode and it was the first reference electrode to be developed and described. The Standard Hydrogen electrode can be not convenient because of the need of hydrogen gas supply. One has to use unit fugacity instead of unit pressure of hydrogen gas and unit activity instead of concentration of hydrogen ions. The Reversible Hydrogen Electrode abbreviated as RHE differs from the standard hydrogen electrode that its potential doesn’t changes with the pH so that it can be used in the electrolyte. The difference of potential across a reversible cell made up of any electrode and a Standard Hydrogen Electrode is called the reversible potential. It is a subtype of the standard hydrogen electrodes. It is in the electrolyte solution and is not separated by salt bridge. Few of the examples of RHE are the calomel electrode, silver-silver chloride electrode, and mercury pool; these are very, very easy in use and appliance, practice and give very good performance in terms of reproducibility.
