Hydrogen is utilized as a fuel source in many industries. It is a clean fuel that burns to produce clean exhaust. Hydrogen is used in vehicles, generators and aircrafts. It is used in advanced cooling systems for micro turbine generators. Hydrogen is the fuel source of the future and there are several different ways to harness it from the natural environment. A mixture of methane and steam is heated to high temperatures and used with a catalyst to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide. However a new method to extract hydrogen from biomass has been developed. This process involves extracting hydrogen from ethanol. The high temperature and high pressure steam can only be achieved in large scale industrial operations. Therefore this form of hydrogen creation is still not flexible enough to be used on a small scale. The process is referred to as aqueous phase reforming.
The production of hydrogen from biomass using high temperatures and extreme pressure is leading to more avenues for hydrogen as a fuel source. Using biomass as a raw material will make hydrogen a renewable energy source and will efficiently make the vehicle industry a clean industry. Another form of extraction utilizes the pyrolysis of biomass to produce a liquid product known as bio-oil. It is a perfect transportation medium for hydrogen. Bio-oil is a favorable byproduct as hydrogen can be easily extracted from it without the need for high temperatures or pressure. The benefit of using this method is ability to easily utilize bio fuel to create hydrogen in any location. Therefore it is will be a simple task to provide hydrogen and distribute it to regions where it may be difficult to produce production facilities.
Another prospective process of creating hydrogen from biomass involves utilizing glucose from plants and animals to create hydrogen. This process is dependent on the environment but provides an infinite source of hydrogen. The waste carbon dioxide can be reused to promote the growth of plants which will be used the following year for the production of hydrogen. Each of these processes is a viable solutions for a future in which hydrogen will play a major role. With the rising costs of fossil fuels hydrogen has become an attractive source of energy.
