Hydrogen Model

Most likely, most of you did not like the chemistry in school and it is doubtful there is something you remember from the chemistry classes at that time even though stuff such as the model of a chemical element’s atom is something very simple which if taught in schools from the very beginning. That is actually how the first chemistry lesson starts. Anyway, you probably understand that the atom’s model is different for each chemical element but it follows a certain rule which has no exceptions. And as an example of that rule, we will take a look at the hydrogen model since the hydrogen atom is the simplest atom in the periodic table of chemical elements.

However, let’s switch back to the general rule used for determining the model of an atom (and the hydrogen model in particular). It is quite an easy and enjoyable activity. All you need is the Mandalay’s Table and some knowledge which you are going to be provided with in this article. So you need the periodic table of chemical elements so that you can see which the atom number of the particular chemical element is. Once you have found out what the atom number is, you know plenty of facts about the atom of this chemical element although you may not realize it. For instance, the atom number gives you information about the protons in the atomic nucleus and also about the electrons which are located outside the atom’s nucleus. Perhaps, you’ve heard that there are also neutrons in the atomic nucleus but their number does not always depend on the chemical element’s atomic number.

So once you have been provided with that information, it is very easy to build the hydrogen model (let’s remind that it means constructing the model of a single hydrogen’s atom). So you will need the Mandalay’s Table but even if you do not have one, you can easily find it on the Internet that hydrogen is the first chemical element in the table. So its atomic number is “1”. What does this inform us about? Obviously, there is one proton in the atomic nucleus and one electron outside it. The number of neutrons could vary (it could be 1, 2 or 3) which is why there are different isotopes of one chemical element. As you hopefully figured it out, the hydrogen model is very simple to understand as long as you know the general rules about how to build it.
