Hydrogen Purification
Hydrogen is vital in many industries. There are many applications for hydrogen such as in cooling systems and as a renewable fuel source. Hydrogen is gathered from a variety of different sources such as bio-oil and biomass. The most common method is by extraction of hydrogen through fossil fuels such as natural gas, petroleum and kerosene. Hydrogen purifiers are responsible of removing any impurities within hydrogen products. The purer the hydrogen mixture the cleaner the waste products will be. Therefore pure hydrogen is extremely valuable and sought after for many industries. Hydrogen purification systems are used in refineries for the purification of sulphur and other aromatic chemicals. The hydrogen purifier works by removing the impurities that are fed into the gas that are absorbed to the fixed absorbent beds at high pressure. Through this process the gases are desorbed with gas steam. Therefore hydrogen with a purity percentage of 99.999% can be achieved by this process.
Hydrogen stocks are treated in this manner. Compounds that include methanol, ethylene and refinery gases can all be purified during this process. A Hydrogen purification system uses six beds to run the feed gas through. To increase the hydrogen yield, industries increase the set amount of absorbers. Therefore more impurities will be absorbed. Using multiple beds is effective at reducing the size of vessels and quantity of absorbent. This process is run several times through batch operation. The products such as offgas are obtained by employing multiple absorbers which are operated in a step by process. The entire process can be summarized in a few steps. The adsorption process absorbs any impurities within the feed gas. Carbon monoxide created in this process is depressurized and released into a counter-current depressurization. The product is then purged to remove any further impurities. A re-pressurization process is imitated to extract the hydrogen.
Hydrogen purification systems are used in a wide variety of industries. Refineries and petrochemical industries utilize hydrogen purifiers to create a variety of different products with different levels of purity. Fuel cells utilize pure hydrogen as it is necessary to produce clean exhaust due to the types of uses of fuel cells. The food industry uses hydrogen purification systems to create different grades of oil which can be used for cooking and preparation of various foods. Impurities in hydrogen can lead to detrimental effects if used in food and vehicle industries.
