Hydrogen Purifier

Hydrogen purifier is a very useful device, especially since the scientists found so many great usages about the first element of the Mandalay’s Periodic Table. However, the problem is that hydrogen is often extracted from complicated chemical compounds. Actually, if you think about it- hydrogen is everywhere around us but it is very unlikely to find it in its pure atomic form in the environment. Let’s take the air: yes, there is hydrogen in the air we breathe but it is mixed with a number of other gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and so on. Obviously, purifying is needed so that the atomic hydrogen is extracted. And what could be mentioned about the water? Yes, you all know that the water molecule consists of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. Again, the hydrogen is not available in its pure form which means that a hydrogen purifier is still needed.

But what does this purifier actually is? It is certainly a question which you are already asking yourself, aren’t you? If you think about any complicated machines or devices, you are far from the truth. What is most often used in the practice as a purifier for hydrogen is a tube which is made of an alloy. However, it is very important that the alloy consist of two elements only: silver and palladium. When any chemical compound containing hydrogen goes through the tube, its crystal lattice ‘catches’ the hydrogen atoms only and lets the rest of the compound go. This is how atomic hydrogen is obtained and used for so many purposes (there is no need mentioning them since everybody knows). But in order to finish with the tube’s description and the purifying process, there is just one more thing to mention: the tube needs to be heated up to 300 degrees Celsius.

Well that was pretty much everything which you should know about the hydrogen purifier. Hopefully, you have figured it out that it is nothing like a complicated machine or device but only a tube (serving as a bolter) made of palladium and silver. This is how pure hydrogen is obtained in 99% of the cases in the practice. Of course the chemical compound used needs to contain at least one hydrogen atom otherwise hydrogen cannot be obtained. And the more hydrogen the chemical compound has got, the more purified hydrogen will be obtained in the end of the purifying process. It sounds pretty logical, doesn’t it?
