Bureau Of Mines
The Bureau of Mines is an organization which was started long ago in the beginning of the 20th century. The United State Bureau of Mines was begun in 1910. There were numerous deaths and mortalities related to the working atmosphere or occupation of mining.
The United States Bureau of Mines was established with the primary and most important goal of providing increased safety in the field of Mining.
Its only target was to promote and propagate increased safety and this was to be done through research and development of training. It used to provide information regarding minerals related to the mines to the general public.
September 1995 saw the end of this organization with the Congress voting it to be shut down. In the 85 years of its history, the United States Bureau was involved in a myriad of activities. The Technical information Centre and library had a huge collection of the United State Bureau of Mines literary work.
The bulletins were full of information regarding the important projects. It also had a collection of information on scientific projects, historical programs and also research on the economy. The most important research or scientific information on minerals was also published.
The United States Bureau can boast of its various accomplishments.
The position of pride would be its major contribution in successfully cutting down and reducing fatalities and accidents in the mines to about 97 %. The numbers were quite pathetic in 1907 and were an astounding 3000. Then number of accidents in mines reduced to just 98 in 1993.
Another of its humanitarian achievement was in developing rescue equipment which was designed for use by the miners for keeping themselves safe if at all they got trapped inside.
They also developed a method to extract radium at a lower cost, so that it could be used to help in cancer chemotherapy.
The United States Bureau also has developed an innovation to recycle the waste matter produced by the municipalities and this method is now embraced all over the globe.
The metals, plastic and paper from the municipalities was also disposed and recycled.
The acid mine drainage from the mines is a very important concern for the environment and human population in general. The bureau developed wetlands to counter this menace.
It also developed methodic planning for extraction of titanium, zinc, radium, cobalt, zirconium and chromium.
The Bureau has also developed a biological method with the help of certain bacteria, to remove arsenic from the waste water accumulated on public and private lands.
