Gold Mining Dredge

Gold mining is an active activity carried out for the purpose of extraction of gold mineral ores and this activity is done by gold mines in gold producing countries. The activity may be done in large scale or small scale, the scheme on which determines this factor is the attributes of the mineral deposits available in a certain area, and the financial standing of the company or individual interested in the extraction of this mineral.

 

Gold mining dredges are most utilized in the large scale extraction of placer gold. A gold dredge is a machine that uses a mechanical method for the extraction of placer deposits, using steel bucket located at the front end of the dredge vessel. This bucket is used to dig up gravel or sand then sifts it using water, waste materials then pass through the dredge machine system and dumps them behind the dredge. These materials are referred to as the tailing piles and there is a cylinder that’s located at the steel bucket that allows small undersize material to fall into the sluice box.

 

The concept behind this extraction is to allow gravel particles to settle and the bottom of the cylinder then is shaken to allow gold, which is denser than these particles, to settle at the bottom of the cylinder. The basic concept behind placer mining has remained ever since the days of the gold rush, the original method however involves the use of gold pans, sluice box and rockers. Each method utilizes the use of washing sand or gravel to allow the gold deposits to settle down.

 

As earlier mentioned dredges use the same concept only this time it is utilized in large scale settings. The production of the placer deposits using this concept is considered to be cheaper than the hard gold mining systems and it is also noted that this system does not need much expertise as the underground mining methods, compared to underground mining that uses drills extensively for mining purposes.

 

Tools for placer mining are few and mechanically formed to take advantage of sifting for the purpose of extracting gold. Safety measures for all workers should be observed while carrying out dredge mining activities and negligence of any part of the guidelines set can course very serious injuries and this may lead to death in some cases. Every machine should be put off when production has ended, every personnel must work in unison with the others to avoid some of the accident associated to this type of gold mining.
