Australia was mainly inhabited by ex-convicts who had been mostly outlawed from Britain and other British colonies around the world.

The first traces of Australian gold deposits were discovered in Victoria at around 1849 sparking out a gold rush which saw formerly inhabited towns such as Melbourne become ghost towns as ever body left for greater fortunes n the gold mines.
