Mining Industry India
The Indian government established that mining and mineral industry was the backbone of its industrial growth. India has a wide variety of minerals that it exports all over the world. The mining sector plays a major role in the industrial sector by providing the much needed raw materials for the industries. The mining industry in India first registered activities in as early as 1774 when the very first English company was permitted to prospect for coal.
Approximately 100 years from the above date, another company by M/s john Taylor and sons Ltd made its first attempt at gold mining in the Kolar gold fields. After this gold exploration, it did not take long before another company got the green light to drill for oil in Digboi. All these attempts at gold and oil prospecting were successful. The only short fall was the fact that the mining and drilling remained below average perhaps due to the crude machinery used or simple lack of proper management fro the concerned parties. For a long time to follow, the mining industry in India remained rather subdued in spite of the rosy introductions done earlier in the years.
After India attained its independence from the British rule, the mining industry that had remained primitive for the better part of its existence started to witness some changes for the better. Since independence to date, the mining sector in India has recorded tremendous growth which has seen the country export about 84 different minerals and other commodities including coal, lime stone and other non metallic as well as metallic substances. Fuel is one the major discoveries that has greatly contributed to India's development in recent times. With a vibrant mineral background, India has thus been able to join the league of rapidly industrializing nations.
The mining industry cannot be overlooked as it currently employs about 1.1 million people and constituting about 16% of India' total exports. This makes it a major segment in the Indian economy. As much as the mining industry in India has registered considerable growth, the sector continues to use simple technology in the mining industry thanks to the open pit mining system and the surface available mineral deposits that saves the miners the pain of having to invest in very expensive machinery. In real facts, open cast mining and surface mining constitutes about 80% of India's total mining techniques. Of all the minerals available in India, Mica is the mineral that India produces in quantities unmatched by any other single country so far. Other main metals are Aluminum, bauxite and iron ore.
