Mining In The West

The major part of the history of the West has been linked in some way or the other to Mining. The American gold rush of the nineteenth century has stayed on in the pages of history and has contributed to a variety of activities in those times.

American cannot deny the role of Mining in causing several developments, be it political or economic or even cultural.

The Gold rush of 1849 was such an event, which had shaken the very roots of American history. Americans of all kinds, be it women or men were donning the adventurer's hat and leaving their homes in search of Gold. The phenomenon was so overwhelming and significant that these Americans came to be popularly known as the forty niners. This term was used to describe those youth or citizens of America who joined in the mad gold rush of 1849.

But it was California who benefitted most out of this frenzy for gold by the American westerners. Even the small remote towns of California suddenly became popular overnight. Locals were striking gold, but of a different variety. They earned hundreds of dollars by exploiting this mad gold rush of the West.

Water was very difficult to find in these gold rush towns, and the locals earned loads of money by selling water to the immigrants, sometimes the cost soared up to even $100. History has it that Levi's Strauss started his business during this boom time. The jeans which he actually innovated during that time was mainly meant for the miners and the gold diggers, and was created with the purpose of offering a trouser which would withstand the wear and tear of the rough conditions during mining or gold digging.

Eventually after the fervent gold mining efforts of all these ambitious people, the gold reserves started to deplete and the rudimentary procedures like panning which were used in those days did not yield much gold. This created panic among the miners and they started to look aggressively for much more developed and fruitful mining techniques. The hydraulic mining technique was thus invented, where a gigantic amount of water is released suddenly on to the ground to loosen up any hidden gold in the rocks. But these techniques not only caused wide spread loss of human life but also depleted the local environmental reserves and the first environmental disaster struck in California. The river beds were all shattered apart by the hydraulic mining and yet California continued to abuse its own land for the sake of Mining gold.
