Bisbee's History of Mining

In the year 1875, Hugh Jones confirmed the presence of copper, and was in doubt and could not verify if it was actually silver or copper. And nearly two years later Jack Dunn found ores when on his military posting. But bounded by the duties of the military, he could not do anything more about the discovery.

He confided in a person called George Warren, and struck up a treaty to create a mineral claim. Finally Warren settled down in Arizona. And then in 1880 DeWitt Bisbee a native of San Francisco took over the charge of Queen Mine ensuing the town to be famed as Bisbee, and produced around copper amounting 8 billion pounds in addition to gold, silver, lead, and zinc. Copper manufacture began on a partial origin around 1880.

Gradually some of the small scale industries boosted the production. Phelps Dodge Corporation, through a contributory the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining co., became the central force and ultimately the individual operator of the district. Developing its base in Bisbee, Phelps Corporation soon became the largest copper manufacturer in the United States.

In 1975, the Phelps Dodge Corporation shut down the Bisbee underground mines. This was then converted in to a tourist destination and facilitates the visitors to experience the pleasure of a mine tour. The mine tour was a part of the Queens copper mines.

The combined sentiment of the local people and the mayor of the place, Mayor Chuck Eads were to keep alive the brilliant tradition and present to the visitors a glimpse in to the glorious past of Bisbee.

Help and assistance poured in plenty. Locals, volunteers and the supporters all were more than ready to contribute in and chipping in to clear up the debris and also to re-timber the old and worn out structures. The workers doing this clean up job were provided with food and a place to live, by many support groups and the local residents.

The efforts of these good minded people were not wasted as the Federal agency, called the economic Development Administration, started noticing them. The Economic Development Administration promptly granted hefty amount to the City of Bisbe. This grant was utilized to improve all the mine tours and also to make the downtown Bisbee more attractive to prospective tourists.
