Queensland Coal Mines
Black coal exploitation represents one of the Australian's most important industries, which has improved this country's economical existence, providing population with low cost electricity and high employment.
There are tow types of coal which are extracted in Australia: high quality black coal and a lower quality of brown coal. Black coal is used for overseas exports as well as for power generation and it can be found in Queensland area. Before transporting it to power stations or shipping, the black coal mining takes place in underground mines.
Queensland is one of the Australian states which have registered a great economical improvement since it's one of the global leaders in coal mining. As the demand for coal has increased so were this state's coal exports, mainly centred to Asian areas. In order to meet the demands, the Australian Government has expanded the coal transport by improving the country's infrastructure, also creating jobs in order to expand the export opportunities.
Queensland is exporting up to 30 billion tones annually therefore there are about six highly efficient rail networks which link to six terminal exports of the Queensland `s ports. At North-South there is Abbot Point Coal Terminal, at Hay Point there is
Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal and Hay Point Services Coal Terminal, at the Brisbane port there is Fisherman Islands Coal Terminal and at Gladstone there is RG Tanna and Barney Point Coal Terminals.
One of the newest coal mines in Queensland is the Crinum mine which lies between MIM's Oaky Creek mines and Rio Tinto's Kestrel in the Bowen Basin. The Crinum mine is operated by the Gregory Joint Venture Company which has replaced Emerald mine with Crinum, having a capacity of a total amount, reaching up to 4.25Mt/y of mineral coal. Crinum is a mine of 85 meters deep with a 6 metres diameter, having vertical ventilation. Miners work at depths below 80 meters having safety issues regarding water inflow, using computer systems to record water inflows. The coal quality is very important in order to meet the market demands. There are some specific elements to be taken into account: the moisture, the volatile matter, ash, sulphur and crucible swelling number.
The Queensland's coal mining industry is of a great importance for the state's economy, but at the same time there are some negative aspects regarding the environmental impacts that Australian people are concerned about, as coal burning leads to clime changes causing, The Global Warming.
